Dissonant Articles (List)

As with the Articles list, this page lists the articles I’ve read and found useful over the years, but with one important difference: these are articles I consider to be ‘dissonant’*, meaning that they concern supremely undesirable notions and/or sobering subjects and themes. Collectively, they can be basically described as inherently revealing, essentially provocative (i.e. indirectly when not directly), socially critical, unusually interesting, generally unsettling and sometimes frightening. Or (to unadvisedly borrow a thoroughly abused cultural trope), this is a ‘red pill’ list.

*As I defined and illustrated with the Dissonant Book-Type (from my article A Typology of Book-Reading – Part I: Modes of Concentration).

The common context of the articles on this page – the fundamental premise of the various authors’ expositions – could be stated as: worrying practices and trends that manifest inconspicuously within society. Thus stated, I suggest that the appropriate motivation for making use of this list would be one based on
a) dissatisfaction with the simplified context that circumscribes mainstream media; and
b) desire to find more substantial (and thus more useful) sources of information on important issues and subjects—especially considering that the mainstream media either neutralizes or excludes such information while ‘alternative’ media so often places it into misleading contexts and/or hysterical forms of presentation (i.e. ‘spin’).

Overall, then, this list is a resource of references to research important yet evaded societal issues via articles of the purest substance-to-spin ratio—that is, the purest I could find!*

*See a description of the ‘Stepping Stones’ manner in which I read and reference literature, which includes the principle ‘Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater’, for both are especially significant in consideration of dissonant literature.
